Rachel Padget's work with Dr.  James Smyth focuses on revealing novel mechanisms of arrhythmogenesis in the context of viral infection of the heart. Viral myocarditis is one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac death in young adults, however, our understanding of how viral infection elicits arrhythmia is limited. Diagnostic tools are also lacking, especially during acute phases of the disease. Under Dr. Smyth's mentorship, she uses molecular, biochemical, and electrophysical techniques to create a new laboratory adenoviral myocarditis model and to explore changes to cardiac cells that lead to arrhythmias during infection. The lab is also testing therapeutic interventions with this model with the hope of restoring normal function to infected hearts.

She holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Central Missouri and an M.S. in Biology from Missouri State University. Her research is supported by a fellowship from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health.
