About this Seminar

Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a master-regulator of cellular metabolism, proliferation, and survival that is implicated in proliferative and metabolic diseases, including pulmonary hypertension, a life-threatening condition with limited treatment options. In this talk, Dr. Goncharova will summarize our current knowledge and recent advances in understanding the role of the mTOR pathway as a signaling hub driving pulmonary vascular remodeling and pulmonary vascular disease via coordinating metabolic, epigenetic, and microenvironmental cues. She will also discuss an emerging role of mTOR as a promising therapeutic target and mTOR signaling inhibitors as potential pharmacological approaches to treat pulmonary hypertension.

Additional Details

This is a free event hosted by the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and co-sponsored by the institute's Center for Vascular and Heart Research. The Pioneers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series, which runs annually from September to May, has featured leading biomedical researchers from throughout the country since the program began in 2012. The lectures are also open to all members of the Virginia Tech community including graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff, as well as the public.
