About this Seminar

Researchers often try to translate their work towards the improvement of patient care, but have focused less on how it could translate to the development of the laws and regulations that shape human health. Using the example of substance use disorders and drawing from the speaker's experience in the White House, Congress, and state legislatures, this presentation will describe how research has affected the design of policy, why such translation succeeds or fails, and what scientists can do to make a contribution to better policies toward addiction.

Additional Details

This is a free event hosted by the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and co-sponsored by the institute's Center for Health Behaviors Research. The Pioneers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series, which runs annually from September to May, has featured leading biomedical researchers from throughout the country since the program began in 2012. The lectures are also open to all members of the Virginia Tech community including graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff, as well as the public.
