Two new members have been named to the advisory board at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC.
Robert Fralin and Melissa Nelson join 16 accomplished board members with diverse industry backgrounds and expertise. The advisory board plays a key role in supporting the institute by providing strategic counsel, strengthening external partnerships, and helping guide long-term planning.
“I am grateful to have such a distinguished group serving as ambassadors for the institute and the future of science, and I’m honored to welcome Mr. Fralin and Dr. Nelson to our team,” said Michael Friedlander, the institute’s executive director and Virginia Tech’s vice president for health sciences and technology. “Their combined business and medical acumen will bring a fresh perspective to how the institute can accomplish its goals and build on the incredible expertise of the other board members.”
Fralin is the president and founder of R.P. Fralin Inc., a fully integrated real estate development company in Roanoke. He believes in the importance of giving back and serves on numerous non-profit boards and organizations.
Nelson, a board-certified pediatrician, is dedicated to providing a comprehensive approach to children, teens, and young adults facing behavioral and mental health challenges. She serves as vice-chair for the Virginia State Board of Health and chair of the Richmond Pediatric Society and previously served on Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors.
The advisory board is led by president Lisa Karlisch and vice president Wayne Kay, both Virginia Tech graduates.
