New faculty member links nature, nurture, and early brain development
Brittany Howell, assistant professor at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, studies how maternal characteristics and behavior impact brain development in infants. Howell will start recruiting new mothers to participate in her lab’s research studies in 2020. Read More

Robert Gibson named business partnership development director for Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, LINK
Robert Gibson, former global sales strategist and scientist at Novozymes, joined the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC as its associate director of business development for LINK: Center for Advancing Industry Partnerships. Graduate students defend doctoral dissertations
Bharath Sreekumar, mentored by Kenneth Oestreich, successfully defended his dissertation, "The Role of IkZF Factors in Mediating TH1/TFH Development and Flexibility," on Dec. 16, and Liqa Athamneh, mentored by Warren Bickel, successfully defended her dissertation, "Testing the Reinforcer Pathology Theory: A New Insight into Novel Targets for Drug Addiction," on Nov. 4. Both Sreekumar and Athamneh were enrolled in the Virginia Tech Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health graduate program. Congratulations Dr. Sreekumar and Dr. Athamneh!

Fralin Biomedical Research Institute faculty receive top honors from the American Association for the Advancement of Science
This month Fralin Biomedical Research Institute scientists, Michael Friedlander and Sharon Landesman Ramey, were named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a high honor of the world’s largest scientific society. This year five Virginia Tech faculty members were named AAAS Fellows, which is believed to be the most from any Virginia university in 2019. Read More
