News from the Office of the Executive Director:
December, 2020
Dear colleagues, community members, supporters and friends,

As 2020 winds down, I would like to share best wishes for you and your families for the new year. The faculty, staff and students at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute continue to work tirelessly to improve the health of all through science. However, their achievements would not be possible without the support and partnership of an amazing community of partners, friends, supporters and ambassadors – each of you!

Looking back, there have been many challenges over the past year for everyone, including an unparalleled pandemic and its associated health and economic impacts, the ugly face of racism and injustice, climate-associated tragedies, attacks on the scientific process and rational thought, and political strife. Very few of us have been untouched by these factors. I hope that you and your loved ones are all right and have been able to weather these storms while remaining optimistic that a brighter future is truly ahead for all, including our children and grandchildren. This month’s newsletter shares just a small sample of the ongoing work that continues through these challenging times.

On behalf of everyone at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, please be assured that we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of understanding of health and disease, translating this understanding into action and implementation, providing service to our community, and preparing the next generation to carry these missions forward.

In the spirit of Ut Prosim,

Michael J. Friedlander, Ph.D.

Executive Director, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC
Vice President for Health Sciences and Technology, Virginia Tech
