News from the Office of the Executive Director:
October 2022
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

In the past few weeks we have been honored to have our work recognized at Virginia Tech, regionally, nationally, and globally.

Dr. Zhen Yan, inaugural director of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Center for Exercise Medicine Research, traveled to Denmark to receive the prestigious Jacobæus Prize from the Novo Nordisk Foundation for his work in metabolism and exercise medicine research. The prize comes with an award of €1.5 million DKK (roughly $200,000 U.S.)

Earlier this month Heywood Fralin and I were recognized for our medical and health leadership by Research!America, a powerful voice for health research nationally. The honor speaks to the strength of our work on behalf of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC and Virginia Tech, our expanding partnership with Children’s National, and our partnership with Carilion Clinic in building awareness and advocating for biomedical research on the state and national stages. Past honorees include President Biden and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Closer to home, Dr. Rob Gourdie and I are being inducted into the Southwest Virginia Business Hall of Fame. Gourdie is being honored as the 2022 entrepreneur of the year for the biotech spinoff Tiny Cargo Co., which produced a novel drug-delivery method using nano-sized capsules, called exosomes, derived from cow’s milk, while I am being recognized as a 2022 laureate for work in establishing and building a robust biomedical research enterprise in southwest Virginia.

Virginia Tech’s Aspire! Awards recognize students, faculty and staff who exemplify Student Affairs’ aspirations for student learning. Dr. Leanna Belvins, assistant vice president for Health Sciences Education and Student Affairs at our Health Sciences and Technology Campus, was recognized for her “amazing job of mentoring students, pulling faculty and administrators together to serve students, and creating a more robust student support structure.”

We are proud of the recognition for our health advocacy, leading-edge biomedical research, commercialization efforts, and support for our students and academic community. It is the direct result of the strength of the institute and its supporters.

Yours truly in the spirit of Ut Prosim,

Michael J. Friedlander, Ph.D.
