News from the Office of the Executive Director:
February 2023
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

There’s a tangible excitement in the air at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC. We are honored to share in the celebration of Black History Month. We are especially proud to recognize and celebrate our Black faculty, staff and students at the research institute and across the entire Health Sciences and Technology campus, as well as the many other Black scientists and biomedical researchers who have contributed to the health science enterprise across the world over many years.

In addition, it is American Heart Month, an opportunity for people to focus on their health as we pursue cardiovascular research. Three Fralin Biomedical Research Institute students in the Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health graduate program were awarded prestigious American Heart Association predoctoral fellowships to support their research. It is a credit to the students, their faculty mentors, and the research environment for such a high number of graduate students from our program to receive such highly competitive awards.

Also this month, Hokies around the world will celebrate Giving Day, a 24-hour event where we show support for our favorite groups – including the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute – beginning at noon on Feb. 15. Since its inception, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute has benefited from private gifts from contributors who appreciate our work and invest in our students, faculty, and research. It is an opportunity to support a cause we all share, and by doing so, we show the way for new benefactors to join us.

Yours truly in the spirit of Ut Prosim,

Michael J. Friedlander, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC
Vice President for Health Sciences and Technology, Virginia Tech
Senior Dean for Research, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
