Attorney General meets with VTC researchers on heroin and substance abuse

The heroin and prescription drug crisis continues to be a large problem in Virginia.
On Wednesday, Attorney General Mark Herring met with researchers at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute to share ideas and find better ways to tackle the issue.
Herring says last year Virginia lost nearly 1,000 people to heroin and prescription drug overdoses.
"Are there predictive things that we can learn about who might be at risks?" Herring asked. "Particularly, in adolescents and young people and what we can do to help them never get started on drugs that can lead to an addiction or independence."
The medical school is researching the biology of addiction and educating doctors on risks associated with prescription drugs.
