ROANOKE, Va (WSET)--Doctors in Roanoke are changing the lives of babies who have suffered from strokes.

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute is holding the first ever pediatric trial for a new rehabilitation method for infant stroke victims.

The method is called “I-Aquire,” and it is being taught to twelve other medical centers.

The children will be allowed to do normal activities such as play or eat. However, their unaffected limbs will be restricted so the weak parts of the body can naturally develop strength.

Dr. Stefanie DeLuca, associate professor of the institute, cleared up some misconceptions around extremely young stroke survivors.

"We think about stroke as something that happens in the elderly but in fact, some references site that infants are even more likely to have strokes," said Deluca.

She explained how strokes can happen as early as before birth or shortly after.
