Oscar Alcoreza

Graduate Student, Translational Biology, Medicine and Health
  • Sontheimer Lab

Oscar Alcoreza's work under the supervision of Dr. Harald Sontheimer focuses on the contribution of astrocytes to the pathology of epilepsy in hopes of identifying targets for the development of novel anti-seizure drugs. Currently, anti-seizure medications do not provide relief for 1-in-3 epileptic patients. His work with the Sontheimer lab investigates the efficacy of inhibiting system xc-, a glutamate/cystine antiporter expressed on astrocytes, to reduce seizures in mouse models of epilepsy.

Oscar earned a B.S. from the College of William & Mary and an M.S. from Boston University. He was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medial Research Fellow for 2017-18.
