News from the Office of the Executive Director:
November, 2021

Carla Finkielstein, Ph.D., provides an overview of the institute's Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory's COVID-19 analysis operations for members of the Virginia Senate's Finance Committee earlier this month.

Dear friends and colleagues,

Earlier this month we had the pleasure of hosting members of the Virginia Senate’s Finance Committee to show them our new research building. This key group of government leaders are among the many supporters who have played major roles in supporting our growth in order to fulfill our mission of discovery, innovation, and translation through science in the service of improved health for families across the Commonwealth and worldwide. It was a pleasure to share what the State’s investments into the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute are yielding by touring our new facilities in Roanoke together.

We’re currently recruiting three new team leaders in developmental neuroscience, metabolism and obesity, and brain cancer research to launch their research programs in Roanoke and Washington, D.C. And, in addition to expanding personnel, we’re procuring new equipment, representing next generation technologies and recently brought online multiple Core Services facilities to help our researchers to incorporate top-tier instrumentation into their work – catalyzing new, innovative approaches to advance their research.

We are deeply grateful for the support of the government leadership, private donors, our employees and students, our advisory board, our research partners, and the broader communities we serve for enabling our continued growth and success.

In the spirit of Ut Prosim,

Michael J. Friedlander, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC
Vice President for Health Sciences and Technology, Virginia Tech
Senior Dean for Research, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
