Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We’re continuing to grow. We have added top-tier faculty research team leaders over the summer, and in the next few months we will be inviting more to interview with us in Roanoke, Va., and Washington, D.C.
Cancer biologist Dr. Kathleen Mulvaney joins us Oct. 1 as an assistant professor. Her lab will be in Washington, D.C., in our facilities located on the Children’s National Research and Innovation Campus, where she will join Dr. Jia-Ray Yu in pursuing treatments for childhood brain cancers. We are recruiting to fill another position in brain cancer research who will work with them as part of the growing partnership between Virginia Tech and Children’s National Hospital.
Our newest faculty member who arrived in Roanoke on Sept. 1 is Dr. Zhen Yan, the inaugural director of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Center for Exercise Medicine Research. He was recently in Baltimore at the 2022 Integrative Physiology of Exercise Conference recruiting for an innovative researcher in exercise medicine. We are also launching our latest efforts to grow our collaborative partnerships with VT’s College of Engineering through a new faculty recruitment in the area of biomaterials and body-device interfaces in our new research building in Roanoke. We are recruiting expertise in the development and application of materials compatible with living systems to treat disorders in humans and/or animals and in the development of interfaces and systems for monitoring and analyzing health data remotely.
With the onset of fall we also saw the return of our graduate students in Translational Biology, Medicine and Health and the arrival of our first cohort of undergraduate biomedical research students in the new Integrated Health Sciences Research program.
I look forward to sharing more about our growth and other exciting developments from our faculty, students and staff with you soon.
Yours truly in the spirit of Ut Prosim,
Michael J. Friedlander, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC
Vice President for Health Sciences and Technology, Virginia Tech
Senior Dean for Research, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
Professor, Biological Sciences, Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and Affiliated Faculty, School of Biomedical Engineering and Science
