Juneteenth Celebration of Black Scientists and Engineers
American colleges have been integrated for more than a half century – nearly 70 years in Virginia Tech’s case. Yet as of 2021, fewer than one in 10 jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the United States was occupied by a Black person, according to the Pew Research Center.
On June 17, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC hosted a day long recognition of Juneteenth featuring eight accomplished Black STEM professionals who discussed their journeys, their work, and the ongoing challenges and opportunities for people from underrepresented groups to enter careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
