MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) - LARGE BORE

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute's large bore MRI facilities include four whole body scanners located in Roanoke and Blacksburg.

Two Siemens MAGNETOM Trio 3T MRIs

The facilities include a Siemens MAGNETOM 3T scanner. This is a whole body 3T MR system that uses a gradient system with max amplitude of 40 mT/m at a slewrate of 200 T/m/s. This system can be used with a 12-channel head matrix or a body coil. The system is equipped for advanced, high-resolution structural imaging, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and functional MRI (echo planar imaging).

Two Siemens MAGNETOM Prisma 3T MRIs

The facilities include two Siemens MAGNETOM Prisma 3T MRIs. This state-of-the-art whole body 3T MR system uses a gradient system with max amplitude of 80 mT/m at a slewrate of 200 T/m/s and an all-digital RF system for higher SNR and improved stability.

This system can be used with the following coils:

  • 64 channel head/neck
  • 20 channel head/neck
  • Tx/Rx CP Head
  • Tx/Rx 15 channel knee
  • Loop coil
  • Spine matrix
  • Body 18

This system is equipped for advanced, high-resolution structural imaging, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), functional MRI (echo planar imaging), and Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL).

Supplementary Equipment

  • Hitachi Multimedia Projector (back-projection)
  • Stimulus computer running NEMO (in-house stimulus program) and MATLAB with PsychToolbox
  • Current Designs 8-Button Bimanual Fiber Optic Response Pad
  • Harvard Apparatus Syringe pumps for sensory studies
  • Other equipment that must be requested includes:
    • Optoacoustics FOMRI III TM + adaptive noise cancelling system
    • Tobii eyetracker for behavioral studies

The staff provides required training, troubleshooting for equipment issues, and consumables including sanitation and cleaning supplies.

All charges are per hour

To access any of the neuroimaging equipment, begin by contacting facility director Duy Phan (dqphan@vtc.vt.edu), who will:

  • Schedule and conduct required training.
  • Provide access to scheduling calendars.
  • Authorize access to the scanners once training is completed.

Rate Schedule (internal/external)

  • MRI (per hour):  $500 / $805

Options for volume discounts

All customers receiving discounts must be approved in advance. Discounts are calculated based on usage for a fiscal year starting when approval granted.

  • Waived charge for hours 101 – 300
  • Waived charge for hours 501 – up

Scanning hours are billed on a monthly basis and are based on time reserved (including set-up and clean up) which should be accurately recorded in the Scanning Log binder. Approximately one week prior to invoicing, you will be asked to verify hours and funding numbers.

Duy Phan coordinates MRI Safety (basic) and Advanced User training. Your group will need at least one advanced user and one basic user (or higher) trained in order to operate the scanner, as it is required that both are present at each scan. Basic training takes approximately one hour. Advanced user training is a full day course, plus additional scanning observation hours and operation hours. A final signoff occurs after the advanced user has completed the requirements.

The facility staff requests that all users assist in monitoring supply levels (linens, Cavi-wipes, earphone covers, CD/DVDs, etc.). These typically take 1-2 weeks to replenish, so please notify Duy Phan as soon as possible so that the facilities may continue to run smoothly.
