BEHAVIORAL TESTING FACILITY

The Behavioral Testing Facility, located in Room R1089 of 2 Riverside Circle, contains four small suites equipped for comprehensive behavioral testing of research subjects. The behavioral paradigms performed in the core include tests for cognitive, emotional,  social, and motor functions.

This is a self-service facility.

This is a self-service facility, but users must request access to the equipment rooms and scheduling calendar.

Scheduling

  • To gain fingerprint access to R1089 suite, start a conversation with IT.
  • To access the Google calendar, email Dr. Alexei Morozov.
  • To reserve a room, use the Google calendar and submit user's name and lab's name, room, and equipment you will be using during the times you need it.
  • You may book space only two weeks out to allow others the option to sign up. Please refrain from booking reoccurring reservations longer than two weeks.

The Rooms

Do not open the doors to any behavioral core room unless you are signed up.

Room A is used for running wheel analysis.

Room B is used for open field, Morris water maze, sociability, or other mazes. It has four cameras with USB exports for live input into any computer. Two cameras are mounted on flexible arms on the ceiling for overhead video, and two are on adjustable tripods for side-view video. These cameras have no memory, so you need to hook up the camera to a computer. There is a computer available on a cart with ANY-maze software. Videos can also be exported for use on any open source analysis software. The live ethernet port in Suite B is in the bottom right quadrant.

Room C houses equipment for fear conditioning, startle, and avoidance paradigms. It also houses a touch panel operant system.

Room D has a sink and houses additional mazes and equipment including radial maze, T maze, light dark boxes, smaller black open field boxes, forced swim, and hot plate.

Other equipment available from Morozov Lab: Elevated plus maze

  • The behavioral core rooms need to be added to IACUC protocols.
  • Always use the calendar to sign up.
  • Clean room after every use, even if using the next day. There is a broom and dust bin in the corner and extra waste baskets can be found in Morozov Lab, R1062.
  • Clean behavioral boxes with 70% ethanol or other cleaning agent.
  • Report any issues or damage immediately.
  • No trash or bedding materials should remain in the room.
  • Research subjects brought to the behavioral suite from LAR cannot be returned to LAR. We house filter top facilities in the second-floor vivarium holding spaces.

ANY-maze Software

ANY-maze is available on the computer on the cart (typically stored in Room C). We have two software licenses to download for analysis. http://www.anymaze.co.uk/index.htm

When moving the computer cart to another room, you must shut down the computer completely, unplug it then move it to the new destination and restart it. Cameras must be plugged into the computer (4 USB ports in the back, front USB ports are bent/broken) to video record through the software. Live ethernet port in Suite B is in the bottom right quadrant.

Anybody can log in from the home screen under ‘User’. Open the ANY-maze software and select:

User: Farris

Password: blank

The computer is hooked up to the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute intranet (but not external internet) so you can mount the lab server to save files. Try not to save large video files locally for an extended period of time.

There are quick start guides to help get you started.
