As the Communications and Web Manager at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, Matt writes stories about research, researchers and other news at the institute and manages the institute's website.
He joined the communications team in April 2020 after 26 years as an award winning journalist at The Roanoke Times, where he covered everything from crime, courts and local government to fine arts and higher education.
Matt is a Roanoke native and a graduate of Patrick Henry High School, a not very accomplished musician, a former girls lacrosse coach and a high school lacrosse umpire. He's married to Ellen Campbell Chittum, an English learner teacher. They have two daughters, Hadley and Harper.
He earned an A.S. degree in General Studies at Virginia Western Community College before transferring to Roanoke College where earned a B.A. in English. Two years later, he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with an M.A. in English.
As a writer, Matt won numerous journalism national, state and internal awards for news and feature writing and online innovation, including national recognitions from the American Association of Sunday and Features Editors and the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing.
