Hemangi Bhonsle, Ph.D.

Research Associate
  • Yan Lab

Hemangi earned her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory in India under the guidance of Dr. Mahesh Kulkarni. During her doctoral studies, she comprehensively studied the relationship between albumin levels and plasma protein glycation in diabetes both in vitro and in vivo. Hemangi was awarded with Lady Tata Memorial Trust fellowship throughout her Ph.D. training. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Tata Memorial Center in India, where she identified galectin-3-binding membrane glycoproteins in lung melanoma and established their role in metastasis-associated process. Hemangi completed another three-year postdoctoral tenure at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) with Prof. Roop Mallik, where she was involved in understanding how triglyceride is secreted from mouse liver during the feeding-fasting cycles by using biochemical assays and mass spectrometry-based proteomics. During her tenure at TIFR, Hemangi was awarded with a highly prestigious India Alliance DBT Wellcome Trust Early Career Fellowship in 2019-2020. Further continuing her research in disease biology, she joined Dr. Sarika Srivastva lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC to work on the role of neuronal calcium/calmodulin dependent serine kinase (CASK) in postnatal brain development in mice. In particular, this work explored the role of mitochondria in pathophysiology of neurological diseases. To further explore the role of mitochondria in health and disease, Hemangi joined Yan lab at the Center for Exercise Medicine Research at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, where she is now working on identifying and elucidating the functional roles of exercise-mediated humoral factors. She will be using the state-of-the-art mouse molecular genetics, cell biology and imaging approaches in her studies.
