Postdoctoral Associate
The laboratory of Dr. Yassine Sassi at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion located on the Health Sciences and Technology campus in Roanoke (Virginia) https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/research/labs/sassi.html is seeking a dynamic and creative postdoctoral researcher to join the team.
Applicants should hold a PhD or MD/PhD degree with less than four years of postdoctoral experience and have research interests in cardiac and/or pulmonary diseases. Candidates should be enthusiastic about collaborative and interdisciplinary research, be highly motivated to develop as an independent scientist, have a strong work ethic and demonstrate excellent scientific and communication skills. The candidate is expected to participate in research grant preparations, manuscript writing and presentation of research results at international conferences. Expertise in the following areas is advantageous: in vivo models of cardiovascular and/or pulmonary diseases, mammalian cell culture, molecular biology and histology.
The Sassi lab is focused on studying the role of coding RNAs, microRNAs and cyclic nucleotides pathways in cardiac health and disease, pulmonary hypertension and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The Sassi lab aims to identify new therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. The laboratory utilizes multiple approaches involving cell and molecular biology, and animal models of cardiac and pulmonary diseases.

Research Associate
The Sassi Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute is seeking a full time Research Associate to assist in general laboratory operations and conduct research experiments together with other lab members. This position is for a minimum of two years with the possibility of reappointment. Responsibilities include knowledge of and experience with general cell and molecular laboratory techniques, basic animal handling (specifically mice) and colony maintenance. Other duties will include basic laboratory management, including supply ordering, maintaining and preparing lab reagents, tracking laboratory expenses, and maintaining laboratory certifications and licenses.
The Research Associate will manage the development of scientific hypotheses, design experiments, collect data, and write manuscripts in particular with relationship to cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Research Associates are an essential part of the scientific team and play a lead role in organizing and conducting the research experiments. The successful team member will be highly detail-oriented, organized, and skilled with monitoring and adjusting priorities, problem solving, and generally ensuring the day-to-day implementation of the research programs. Opportunities to participate in data analysis, and manuscript and/or grant preparation will be available for interested candidates.
Basic duties will include, but will not be limited to, working with laboratory animals; conducting in vivo experiments; analyzing and summarizing research findings; maintaining mammalian cell lines; performing PCR experiments for quantitative and qualitative purposes; providing instruction and assistance in the use of laboratory equipment and research methods and techniques to other team members.
