During the shark-tank style competition, student teams eventually wind up in the "board room" answering pointed questions from judges, as illustrated by this photo from the 2018 competition at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC. This year's board room, however, will be virtual.

About This Event

For the first-time in a “virtual” setting, Virginia Tech students will pitch biomedical commercialization ideas to a “shark tank”-style panel of judges at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, during the Health Sciences and Technology (HS&T) Hokie Pitch.

The competition will involve 15 students who have worked with real-world mentors, selected intellectual property, and created an entrepreneurial plan to develop and commercialize biomedical discoveries. Viewers can watch the live webcast of the teams making their pitches beginning at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The competition, now in its sixth year, involves five teams of Virginia Tech students in the Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health (TBMH) graduate program. The students will compete for $4,000 in cash prizes contributed by the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, Carilion Clinic, Luna Innovations Inc., and the Woods Rogers law firm.
