Archived Lecture: Stem Cells and Genomics for Cardiovascular Diseases
Date: May 7, 2021
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
About this Seminar
Heart disease is the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the industrialized world. Recent technological advancement has enabled the generation of patient-specific and disease-specific human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) in vitro. These iPSC-CMs carry all the genetic information from the individuals from whom they are derived. Dr. Wu will discuss recent advances in this technology and how it may be used for elucidating mechanisms of rare inherited cardiovascular diseases, for drug discovery, and for precision medicine.
Additional Details
This is a free event hosted by the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and co-sponsored by the institute's Center for Heart and Reparative Medicine Research. The Pioneers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series, which runs annually from September to May, has featured leading biomedical researchers from throughout the country since the program began in 2012. Presented virtually via Zoom primarily for research and clinical audiences, the lectures are also open to all members of the Virginia Tech community including graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff, as well as the public.
