About this Seminar
Most chronic diseases present inflammation but their therapy does not include anti-inflammatory compounds (i.e., Alzheimer's disease, dysferlinopathy, diabetes). One possible explanation for not including them is that long-term treatment with available anti-inflammatory drugs causes tissue dysfunctions. Another explanation could be that the inflammatory response of several chronic diseases is not directly mediated by the canonic responses of the immune system. Possible mediators of such responses are non-selective channels such as connexin and pannexin hemichannels. Lately, inhibitors of these channels have been shown to reduce the deleterious progression of certain diseases or even allow complete recovery of the affected organs.
