Innovative Strategies for Overcoming Challenges in Brain Tumor Treatment
Date: Jan. 16, 2026
Time: 11 a.m. to noon
About this Seminar
Glioblastoma (GBM) and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) are aggressive brain tumors with limited treatment options. Emerging strategies harness engineered CAR macrophages to enhance immune responses, while tumor-derived exosomes provide novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Telomerase inhibition offers a promising avenue for disrupting tumor proliferation at the genomic level. Additionally, ultrasound microbubble technology enables targeted delivery of therapeutics across the blood-brain barrier, enhancing precision and efficacy. This talk will explore the synergistic integration of these cutting-edge approaches to develop next-generation therapies for GBM and DIPG.

This is a free event hosted by the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and co-sponsored by the institute's Cancer Research Center — Roanoke. The Pioneers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series, which runs annually from September to May, has featured leading biomedical researchers from throughout the country since the program began in 2012. The lectures are also open to all members of the Virginia Tech community including graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff, as well as the public.
