Social Learning in Borderline Personality Disorder

About this Seminar

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness with high community prevalence (~ 2%) that increases risk for chronic distress and disability and for suicide attempts. People with BPD suffer from profound difficulties in social cognition that are directly associated with these poor outcomes. However, the neurobiology of social difficulties in BPD is poorly understood, in part due to the profound heterogeneity in the BPD population. In this seminar, Dr. Fineberg will describe work to test the role of aberrant social learning in BPD from both categorical (BPD vs healthy control and other psychiatric disorders) and dimensional (across the range of intensities for relevant symptom domains) perspectives.

This is a free event hosted by the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and co-sponsored by the institute's Center for Human Neuroscience Research. The Pioneers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series, which runs annually from September to May, has featured leading biomedical researchers from throughout the country since the program began in 2012. The lectures are also open to all members of the Virginia Tech community including graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff, as well as the public.
